How to Specify a Leather Shoulder Strap
Check bag compatibility, strap dimensions, hardware, adjustment and finishing when planning a custom leather shoulder strap.
A shoulder strap should be specified together with the bag it will support. A strap that looks suitable in a photograph may not fit the attachment rings or provide the intended carrying position. Share details of the bag and how customers are expected to use it.
Start with attachment compatibility
Identify the bag’s attachment points and provide their measurements or a physical example. Specify the hook or fastening style, its opening and the clearance needed around the ring. Include the desired metal finish. Ask the supplier to review the complete connection, including the leather end, stitching and hardware, against the intended use.
Define length, width and adjustment
State the strap width and the shortest and longest usable lengths. Agree whether length includes the hooks, and how the strap will be measured. Identify the intended carrying styles, such as shoulder or crossbody. For an adjustable strap, describe the buckle or slider arrangement and preferred adjustment positions. Consider where seams or hardware may sit against the wearer.
Describe leather and finishing
Use a material reference or swatch to communicate colour, texture and firmness. Clarify the construction, including backing, reinforcement or padding if required. Specify edge treatment, thread colour, stitching appearance and logo placement. Request that any proposed material substitutions be discussed before sample approval.
Sample review checklist
- Attach the sample to the intended bag or agreed fixture.
- Check hook clearance and fastening operation.
- Measure the agreed length range and strap width.
- Check adjustment, comfort and hardware placement.
- Inspect edges, stitching and colour consistency.
- Agree any load or repeated-use checks for the intended application.
Document the final construction and accepted sample so repeat orders refer to the same specification. See leather shoulder strap options or request a quotation with your bag and strap details.
